Gns3 Version 1.2 Labkit
I would definitely pick up at least one 3550 L3 switch. Two would be preferred, but definitely one to get hands-on with layer 3 switches. They don't cost very much on Amazon. For routers I would look at either the 2811s or the 2821s. Anything from the 2800 series really. Get a couple of those with some additional serial modules for practice. I picked up my 2821 for about $40 on Amazon.CBT Nuggets suggests a 3620 or 3640 for Frame relay practice, but I wouldn't worry too much about that.
Gns3 Configuration
Frame relay can be practiced pretty well in GNS3 instead of buying real equipment for it. Here is a link to their recommendations.Personally, I would just pick up a couple of 3550s and maybe a 2960 or two for switching practice. GNS3 doesn't do well with layer 2 and those switches helped me with topics such as private VLANS and VLAN access maps which GNS3 doesn't support. For Router practice GNS3 is adequate IMO. I think c2600-adventerprisek9-mz.124-25d is what I use for my all my routers, but I'd have to check to make sure. Microsoft drivers for windows 7 64 bit. Here is a link for supported iOS for GNS3.
Gns3 Version 1.2 Lab Kit For Windows 7
It's fairly limited, but those are the recommended ones.If you really want a physical lab then a couple 2811s or something like that are what I would recommend. Just make sure to either find one with extra modules or buy the modules yourself. My personal physical lab is a 2821 router, 3750E switch, 2940 switch, and two 3550 switches. I do most of my training in GNS3 or VIRL, but like I said before, there's a few L2 topics that are just better done on physical equipment. I use my lab to run my home network as well.Hope this helps.
